Ford has formerly validated that a sub-Ranger compact pickup would join its truck lineup in the coming years, and we believe this is that vehicle, the 2021 Courier. What’s more, leakage from a current Ford dealership conference appears to recommend that the small, unibody pickup is set to become a member of the Bronco family, joining the standard SUV and its Escape-based little sibling on the company’s roster in 2021 or 2022.
2021 Ford Courier Spy Shots
The Courier mule revealed here appears to be a long method off from its last, off-road-ready form. Squinting (and making assumptions) beyond the heavy plastic camouflage, we see front styling influenced by the outbound Focus hatchback and Escape crossover. The ride height looks like it’s closer to the Focus. A steeply raked front windscreen similarly recalls the Focus/Escape, and it would be wholly inappropriate for something even tangentially related to the Bronco.
That leads us to think the Courier mule’s exterior panels were cobbled together from existing Ford parts to camouflage the engineering being done below the skin. To that result, the Courier makes plain and apparent usage of an independent rear suspension– like the Escape and Focus. That ought to give the Courier reputable handling dynamics on-road. Still, the less robust suspension layout will compromise some outright load-carrying capability and off-road expression compared to the Ranger.
However, we still expect a minimum payload capacity of 1,000 pounds– sufficient for many enthusiasts. The test vehicle seen here is likewise sporting some van-aping rear bodywork that could be concealing payload-testing weights and products.
2021 Ford Courier Engine
There’s also a double exhaust on display, suggesting an engine with reasonably vigorous performance. The wise cash here is on a variation of the Ford 2.0 L twin-scroll– turbocharged EcoBoost I-4, which makes 250 hp and 275 lb-ft in the Edge SUV. A base Courier may also utilize the naturally aspirated 2.5 L I-4 found in the outbound 2019 Escape, where it makes 168 hp and 170 lb-ft. This low-cost mill would make the Courier a perfect replacement for those old 2011 Rangers you see pushed into garden truck and bug control duty.
2021 Ford Courier Production
We must see a production variation of the Courier within the next year, and we’re most delighted to learn what sort of rugged modifications it will receive to fit in with its Bronco and “Baby Bronco” member of the family.
